Quick Thrift Chair Transformation with Pure Artisan™ Gloss Paints
When developing our innovative plant-based gloss paints, we wanted to create a versatile and durable all-in-one product. Pure Artisan™ plant-based gloss paint isn’t just for cabinetry and trim! Pure Artisan™ paint is also great for furniture applications.
When it comes to painting furniture, it’s important to choose a hard-wearing paint that can withstand some wear and tear, especially for high-use items like chairs. Specifically for painting chairs, another factor to consider is ease of application and coverage. Dining chairs in particular can be the most challenging and tedious to paint due to their numerous details, legs, curves, edges, backs, seats, and rails.
Pure Artisan™ Gloss paint was formulated to be long lasting and durable without requiring an additional sealer for protection. Our paint has excellent coverage and goes on thick and smooth. Simplifying the painting process for a quick and more enjoyable experience!
In this step-by-step tutorial our expert painter, Jim Connelly, demonstrates the versatility of our Pure Artisan™ Gloss paint by painting the same chair in each of our gloss Colors. One chair features a bright, crisp gloss white finish and another a striking, bold gloss black finish.

STEP ONE
Surface Preparation
Our talented painter, Jim, isn’t just a master decorative artist, he also has a knack for finding treasures at thrift stores. On one of his recent shopping adventures, he scored a pair of dated dining chairs for just $5 each! Although the seats needed some fresh fabrics, the chair frames were in good condition.
To get started Jim removed the seats and gave the chair frames a quick wipe-down before painting.
For this project, Jim opted not to prime the chair frames beforehand.
Depending on the surface and the color of the substrate you’re painting, priming could help reduce the number of coats of paint and surface adhesion. The best practice is to do a test spot first to determine if you need a primer.
Before applying paint, always make sure surfaces are free of cleaner residue, dust, dirt, and debris.
STEP TWO
Shake & Stir
With the lid firmly secured and closed, shake the container of Pure Artisan™ paint. Open container, then stir from the bottom up. Allow all bubbles to settle before application.
STEP THREE
Application – Let’s Get Painting!
Jim is using our Flat Brush to apply both colors. The Flat Brush is designed for precision and produces exceptionally smooth finishes. Alternatively, our Micro Brush is a wonderful brush for painting chairs. The small lightweight handle of the Micro Brush makes it easy to get into tight corners and around detailed edges.
Pro-Tip: When applying gloss finishes with a brush, use a quality brush designed for smooth application. The smoother the application, the more flawless the finish.
Pure Artisan™ paint has good coverage and hide on the first coat. Our black chair only needed two coats for full coverage. Since the frame of the chair is darker than our white paint, there was more contrast to hide, requiring a 3rd coat of white paint for full coverage.
Allow the final coat of paint to dry overnight, before replacing the seats. For optimal results, allow surfaces to cure 1-2 weeks before use.
STEP FOUR
Re-upholstering the Seats
The seats of the chairs needed a fabric upgrade. Jim chose contrasting monochromatic fabrics to complement the Pure Artisan™ gloss paint colors. The white chair features a delicate and soft grey floral pattern. The black chair features a graphic, almost animal print pattern.
To reupholster, Jim removed the existing seats with a screwdriver. Then using an upholstery staple gun, he covered the old fabric and seat batting with his new fabrics.
The Final Results
White or Black, who wore it best?
