Stenciling with Plaster – Raised Stencil on Furniture How To

Raised stencilling is an incredible way to transform a piece of plain furniture, and create a furniture makeover project to be proud of!

Applying Artisan Enhancements™ decorative plasters to create relief stencils is a popular and easy technique for furniture, walls, and canvas art! Create beautiful raised stencil patterns on a variety of surfaces with the help of Jim’s expert decorative artist method. In this tutorial, Jim is using VP Antico (Venetian Plaster), to create a classic and refined relief stencil on a painted table

The same method could be used to apply Fine Stone or Pearl Plaster to develop different finishes and textures.

STEP ONE

Surface Preparation

Surface Prep! Surfaces should be free of cleaner residue, dust, dirt, and debris. Surfaces should be dry before plaster application. If painting/staining/layering before plaster application, make sure the basecoat of paint/stain/layers are completely dry before application of plaster. For best results let surfaces dry overnight before plaster application. Note: Raw, stone, or untreated surfaces may need to be sealed with Artisan Enhancements™ Clear Topcoat prior to plaster application.

STEP TWO

Stir

Stir VP Antico! Stir from the bottom up before every use to make sure plaster is fully mixed.

STEP THREE

Application – Basic Relief (Raised) Stencil

For relief stencils with plaster mediums, first make sure to use a sturdy, thicker quality stencil. Thin and flimsy stencils will lead to bleeds of the plaster under the stencil. Thicker stencils are also easier to clean, durable, and re-useable

For this application, use a Color shaper, Putty or Palette Knife to apply the plaster. Load the tool with a liberal amount of desired plaster product. Using light pressure, apply a layer of plaster over the stencil openings. Maintaining the level of the product consistent and even throughout, cover all the openings of the stencil with the plaster. Once leveled and as smooth as possible, remove the tape and lift stencil plastic to reveal the plaster relief design. Any bleeds from too much pressure or pushing the plaster under the stencil can be slightly cleaned up with a tooth pick while plaster is still moist.

Allow the plaster to completely dry before proceeding to the next step. Depending on how thick the plaster layer was applied, dry times can range between approximately 30 – 45 minutes. For best results, allow relief stencil to dry overnight. If additional height is desired for the relief stencil, once the first relief stencil layer is completely 100% dry, the same stencil can be repositioned on the existing relief design and an additional layer of plaster can be applied.

Note: If using VP Antico or Fine Stone, once the stencil pattern is completely dry, a fine grit sand paper (250-500) can be lightly used to knock off any sharp or rough edges if needed.

STEP FOUR and FIVE

Paint and Scumble Glaze

In our tutorial, we applied a topcoat of paint and tinted Scumble glaze over the completely dried VP Antico Stencil to achieve our desired finish. To learn more about Scumble Glazing, check out our blog post “The Basics – Getting Started with Scumble Glaze“!

Seal! VP Antico applications can be sealed with Artisan Enhancements™ sealers. See Sealer Tip sheet for proper sealer application.
