Fall is here! The weather is beginning to cool, and everyone is excited about decorating for the season. Think football games, bonfires in the back yard, and the kids jumping into a giant pile of gorgeous leaves you just raked!
These elegant, understated, white pumpkins are the perfect project to add to a lovely tablescape and even Thanksgiving arrangements. We like to use inexpensive faux versions of the pumpkins, to mix and match with gourds and other natural found items like pine cones and leaves with fallen branches.
However, feel free to paint real, well-washed, pumpkins. Artisan Enhancements products can actually prolong the life of them!
Not only are we sharing one pretty project, at the end of the post we offer more options in case you get addicted and want to make lots more.
• Old White Chalk Paint® (Many Artisan Enhancements retailers also sell Chalk Paint®)
• tin foil for a palette, damp rag, small brush
PAINT THE BASECOAT AND A COAT OF PEARL PLASTER.
Brush on two coats of Old White Chalk Paint® and let dry. Use random brush strokes, and even thickened paint, to create the irregularity of real pumpkins. Let dry.
Brush on one or two coats of Pearl Plaster. Let dry.
FIND SOME FALLEN LEAVES AND USE SAND STONE FOR TEXTURE.
There are a few leaves dropping just now, but if you can’t find any yet, you could use leaves from a discount store.
Have a few different sizes to work with, although, since you can reuse them, not many are needed. Place some Fine Stone on your palette, ready to go.
Put some Sand Stone on the color shaper. Hold a leaf, turned upside down, with one finger. Pull the color shaper across the leaf, from center to outside the leaf area, and across the stem. Use the same leaf or another one, and keep moving over the entire surface. Fill in blank areas with more Fine Stone. Let dry. The lovely sheen of the Pearl Plaster is offset by the heavy texture of the Fine Stone for a tone-on-tone effect.
ADD FALL FOIL COLORS TO THE STEMS
While waiting for the Sand Stone to dry an hour or so, you can go ahead and paint on a coat of Leaf & Foil Size with a small brush.
Cut about 8″ of gold, copper, or bronze foil, one color per pumpkin. Wrap a piece of foil, SHINY SIDE DOWN, over the stem and burnish with your fingers and fingernails. As long as there is a sticky area on the stem, you can continue adding foil.
If the foiled area remains sticky, seal it with a coat of Artisan Enhancements Clear Finish.
Layer your new pumpkins with gathered items from a nature walk, and perhaps some of the velvet pumpkins that are so popular again this year.
ADD COLOR USING FOILS Skip the coat of Pearl Plaster, brush on a coat of Leaf & Foil Size followed by your choice of foil colors, then continue adding the Fine Stone over the leaves.
MAKE PASTELS Tint the Pearl Plaster and the Fine Stone with some Chalk Paint® to create soft, pastels.
ADD SEVERAL FOIL COLORS Skip the coat of Pearl Plaster. After the texture is dry, brush on Leaf & Foil Size just in the areas where the leaf imprints are. After the size comes to tack, add three coordinating foil colors. Seal the foil with Clear Finish.
Are you excited about the possibilities? How fun would it be to gather some friends and work on this project together?
