Monogram Sign with Glazed & Textured Background
Monogram signs are all the rage in home decor this season!
We’re going to show you how to create your own monogram sign with a textured background using Artisan Enhancements Crackle Tex and VP Antico! A custom tinted Scumble Glaze will give your sign a weathered patina and accentuate the crackle finish! Completing your piece with exterior grade Clear Topcoat Sealer will insure that your sign is ready for use both inside and out!
After giving this discarded wood panel a good cleaning, we stippled Crackle Tex directly onto the entire surface and gave it about an hour to dry completely. A hair dryer can be used to speed up the dry time if you’re in a hurry!
Once the Crackle Tex was completely dry, we applied a fairly thin coat of VP Antico to the entire surface with a color shaper tool, dragging the product across the board in varied directions. Once again, a hair dryer will speed up the drying process if desired.
As the VP Antico dries, dramatic cracks will begin to appear, revealing the wood grain underneath. This is a great look on it’s own, but as it would be a bit busy for our sign, we chose to paint over the crackled surface with a coat of Old Ochre for a more neutral, textured background.
The bee stencil has a great laurel wreath that is the perfect size to frame a letter from the vintage alphabet stencil set We taped it in place and used our stencil brushes to stencil the leaves in Olive and Scandinavian Pink.
Working with two colors and blending them directly onto the stencil creates a look that has dimension.
After allowing our stenciled laurel wreath to dry, we centered and taped our B in place for our monogram and used our stencil brush to stencil the letter in Graphite.
Before applying our Scumble Glaze, we first brushed on a quick coat of Clear Topcoat Sealer which provides a workable surface for the glaze. The Topcoat Brush is ideal for applying thin, even coats of sealer.
We created a light brown glaze by mixing 5 parts Scumble to 1 part Olive and Scandinavian Pink. This glaze was applied with a seal wool sponge.
This Scumble Glaze provided just enough color to give the sign a slightly aged appearance.
After a couple of thin coats of exterior grade Clear Topcoat Sealer, this Monogram Sign is ready to be displayed either indoors or out! The textured and glazed background gives it a rich, custom look that’s sure to draw attention!
