From Worn to Wow: Auction Find Entryway Table Makeover

When a client reached out to Jim about a furniture dilemma, he knew he had to rise to the challenge! The client had recently purchased a perfectly sized table for her entryway at an auction. But there was a problem. The old worn finish of the table was all wrong for her style. The table was in dire need of TLC and a makeover.  Sander and paint brush ready, Jim worked his magic!

Jim lovingly refinished the wooden veneer top with a fresh coat of Nature’s Wood Stain in Dark Walnut and Clear Topcoat Sealer. Inspired by details of an existing mirror frame, Jim painted the table’s base and legs a soft shade of grey and applied a white tinted Scumble glaze.

Reimagined and refinished, the table now complements the client’s home and is the perfect fit for the space!

STEP ONE

Surface Preparation

We start every project with a dusting and cleaning to remove any old grime. To revive the tabletop, Jim decided to remove the existing layers of varnish and stain to prepare for a new stain color. When staining surfaces, sanding back to the wood surface allows for better stain penetration and saturation. The table base was to be painted and only needed a quick wipe down.

Before applying stain or paint, always make sure surfaces are free of cleaner residue, grease, dust, dirt, sanding particles, and debris.

STEP TWO

Stir

Stir Nature’s Wood Stain™ from the bottom up before every use – Do not shake. Shaking creates air bubbles in the stain which can be transferred to the surface causing undesired results. If bubbles appear while stirring, allow the bubbles to completely settle before application.

STEP THREE

Application of Stain

Using a Micro Brush or Flat Brush, working in small sections, apply the Nature’s Wood Stain™. Try to avoid drips and pooling when brushing on the stain. Jim has chosen a softer “wipe back” technique to showcase the wood grain and diamond pattern featured on the tabletop. If you’re using the wipe back technique, work in small sections to control how much stain stays on the surface. Wiping back the stain also helps eliminate brush strokes.

STEP FOUR

Seal the Tabletop

For added protection and a longer lasting finish, if only applying one coat of stain, we recommend applying Clear Topcoat Sealer or Clear Finish before use of the surface.

In keeping with the style of the inspiration mirror and home, Jim chose to seal the entry table with Clear Topcoat Sealer Matte/Satin.

For optimal results, allow the stain to dry for 24-72 hours before applying an additional layer of Clear Topcoat Sealer. Nature’s Wood Stain™ and Clear Topcoat Sealer are oil-based products. The longer dry times between coats and layers ensures a better overall cure time of both the stained and sealed surface.

STEP FIVE

Paint the Table Base and Legs

Paint the table base and legs with your preferred chalky style paint in a Soft Grey. For this project, the client provided Jim with a mirror for inspiration. Jim chose a paint color reminiscent of the grey metal tone of the mirror’s frame. Follow paint manufacturer’s recommendation for number of coats, dry times, and sealing.

For optimal results, allow the paint to dry overnight before applying additional layers.

STEP SIX

Add Scumble Glaze to Table Base and Legs

Taking further inspiration from the client’s existing mirror, Jim applied a Scumble Glaze tinted with White Paint to the table base and legs. Apply the tinted Scumble Glaze with a brush and use a lint free cloth to blend the glaze into the painted surface.

STEP SEVEN

Seal the Table Base and Legs

To protect the painted finish and glaze effect – We recommend sealing the project with either Clear Finish Matte or Clear Topcoat Sealer Matte.
